Filipino nurse Charito Romano, BS Nursing Batch 94 of Wesleyan University-Philippines,was awarded the British Empire Medal by the reigning monarch, Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, on the occasion of the yearly New Years Honours which is a part of the British Honours system. The Medal was given in recognition for her outstanding work as a Staff Nurse in the United Kingdom during the Covid-19pandemic.

Romano is recognized for her contributions to the United Kingdom’s COVID-19 response where she has been serving the elderly as a staff nurse at the Arbrook House Care Home in Esher, England since 2018. At the height of the pandemic, her expertise in the field helped ensure that the patients were cared for and kept safe from the virus. It is with her efforts that the care home was able to remain COVID-free from March to December 2020.

WUP president Judge Benjamin D. Turgano (ret.) Wesleyan University Philippines said that Ms. Romano has exemplified the university’s ideal of service above self.

“Her Christian compassion expressed in her selfless and dedicated care for the sick in the midst of difficult and challenging times brought honor and pride not only to her family, her alma mater, but to the Filipino people as well. Indeed, she has given hope in our hearts and has made this world a better place to live in,” added Turgano in his remarks.
