Problems become worse when we act without thinking. A critical worker does not immediately say, ‘Wala na, hindi ko na kaya.’ A critical worker asks: ‘Ano ang totoong problema? Ano ang sanhi? Ano ang puwedeng solusyon?”This was the central reminder shared by Dr. Gladys P. Mangiduyos, Vice President for Administration and Planning, on October 8, 2026, during the sixth session of the institutional staff learning curriculum held at the Jose, Justina, Dominga (JJD) Garcia Auditorium.

Centered on the topic “Problem Solving, Decision-Making: Are We Ready for the Very Strong El Niño?” under the theme “Do Not Just React, Think!”, the session emphasized the importance of critical thinking and prudent decision-making amidst crises and day-to-day administrative operations at the university.

Mangiduyos discussed practical problem-solving steps and highlighted the necessity of distinguishing between facts, assumptions, and rumors before taking action at work.

The discussion also addressed preparations for El Niño, which, according to DOST-PAGASA climate advisories, is expected to persist and potentially reach its peak or most severe phase from the latter part of 2026 through the early part of 2027. Consequently, stress was placed on the University’s readiness against impacts such as declining water levels in reservoirs, threats to water and power supply, and health risks associated with a high heat index.

The session also featured a workshop that tested the readiness of each department by developing concrete steps, such as conserving water and electricity, storing water, and forming a task force dedicated to the safety and well-being of the entire campus.

Each group was invited to answer the question: “Kung dumating ang pinakamahirap na buwan ng El Niño bukas, handa ba ang ating unit at ano ang tatlong bagay na kailangan nating gawin ngayon para masabi nating oo?”

Overall, this series served as a reminder that resolving facilities issues and organizational challenges within the university also begins with strengthening our relationships, work ethics, and accountability in every task.
