Woman National Master (WNM) Millery Gen Subia (Meg), a Grade 7 student at Wesleyan University-Philippines (WUP), earned four medals in the 23rd ASEAN+ Age Group Chess Championships held in Penang, Malaysia, from July 1 to 11, 2025.

Meg won three silver medals and one bronze medal in various individual and team events across different time controls. She secured a silver medal in the Individual Blitz event, which had a time control of five minutes per player. She also participated in the Philippine team that won silver in the Team Blitz and Team Rapid events, with time controls of five minutes and 25 minutes per player, respectively. Her fourth medal came from the Team Standard event (90 minutes plus 30 30-second increments), where the team earned bronze.

Dr. Gener Subia, Meg’s father, expressed his gratitude to the whole WUP community, Meg’s coaches at WUP, Ms. Wenny Vizen and Mrs. Jessica Santos, her class adviser, Mrs. Lydia G. Calipdan, WUP High School Principal, Dr. Tita Camat, Elementary Principal, Dr. Cristy Fernando, and Dr. Henry Cocoy Nacpil, Head of the Cultural Affairs and Sports Development Office (CASDO).

The tournament was organized under the auspices of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) and featured almost 200 participants. Delegations came from the ten ASEAN member countries—Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam—as well as Australia, China, Russia, Japan, New Zealand, the United States, and Chinese Taipei.
