WUP Chess Wonder does it again!Millery Gen Subia bags 5 medals in 21st ASEAN+ Age-Group Chess Championships

Millery Gen W. Subia earned a Gold Medal in the standard event U8 and U10 Girls of the 21st ASEAN+ Age Group Chess Championships held in Asia, Hotel at Bangkok, Thailand last June 17 to 26, 2023.

The standard event, with a Time Control of 90 minutes plus 30 seconds increment per player, is the most prestigious event in the tournament since the top winners of this event per age category will receive direct titles such as Woman Candidate Master/ Candidate Master, Woman FIDE master/ FIDE master, etc. or GM norms from the International Chess Federation (FIDE) provided corresponding ratings will be reached by a winning player.

Millery also known as Meg was undefeated in 9 rounds of the said event scoring 4 wins and 5 draws for a total of 6.5 points enough to earn first place together with Duong Hoang Tran and Ngoc Phuong Thai of Vietnam. Meg was given a certificate of Woman Candidate Master and will be evaluated by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) for her Woman National Master title in the Philippines.

Meg also won 3 silver medals in the team competition of Standard, Rapid (25 minutes per player), and Blitz event (5 minutes per player), and bronze in individual blitz. She won a total of 5 medals for a possible 6 for each player.

Her teammates were the 2023 National Age Group Standard Event Champion, Mary Janelle Tan of Cagayan De Oro City, and the 2023 Philippine Children’s Chess Championship Under-12 Champion, Deandra Castronuevo of Imus Cavite.

Meg is a Grade 4 student in the elementary department of Wesleyan University Philippines.
