To reinforce Wesleyan University-Philippines’ (WUP) commitment to workplace wellness and health education, Ms. Judiliza Guinto Velayo, School Nurse, and Dr. Vibelle A. Vergara, WUP Hospital Administrative Officer, attended the seminar Promoting Early Detection and Multidisciplinary Care for Breast Cancer in the Workplace on June 25, 2025, at Otel Pampanga, Lazatin Boulevard, City of San Fernando, Pampanga.
Speakers included oncologists, workplace health coordinators, mental health professionals, and cancer survivors. They emphasized the need for coordinated efforts among healthcare providers, human resources personnel, and supervisors to support affected employees both during and after treatment.
The program also featured testimonies from breast cancer survivors, sharing experiences that illustrated the challenges and recovery processes associated with the disease. Their stories highlighted the importance of compassionate and structured workplace support systems.
“This seminar was highly informative and eye-opening. It expanded our understanding of how workplaces can become proactive partners in health promotion and disease prevention. It also increases our awareness regarding the practical steps to promote early detection of breast cancer and how a collaborative, team-based approach can significantly improve patient outcomes,” stated Dr. Vergara.
Ms. Velayo corroborated that attending the seminar had reinforced their knowledge to advocate for workplace wellness programs and to share information with others about the critical role of early detection in saving lives. She also noted that the importance of having an employees’ clinic was highlighted during the discussions.
Both attendees agreed that WUP may adopt the best practices of JB Lingad’s Employees’ Health and Wellness Center through We Care and the Hospital and by empowering our Safety Officers.
The organizers expressed their appreciation of the partnership they had with WUP, saying “Pakisabi po salamat nang marami kay President Bong Alvaro.”
