To strengthen research capability and help protect scholarly outputs through practical patent-search training, faculty members, Engr. Prince Rhomel V. Pillagara and Engr. Charles Trebor Fausto of the College of Engineering and Computer Technology (CECT) joined the two-day seminar-workshop “Understanding Intellectual Property: An Introduction to IP and Patent Search,” held on November 27–28, 2025, at Angeles University Foundation (AUF), Saint John Paul 407, Professional School Building.
The seminar-workshop aimed to enhance participants’ knowledge and appreciation of Intellectual Property (IP) and its role in fostering innovation, research, and development. It also supported institutional efforts to strengthen research capability, protect scholarly outputs, and promote responsible innovation aligned with national research and development priorities.
“For Wesleyan University – Philippines, this initiative to join this training is a leverage to have a clear understanding of Intellectual Property and patent systems, which is vital to safeguard its pioneering innovations, such as disaster-resilient technologies and ethical AI platforms, ensuring they remain institutionally owned and recognized,” noted Dr. Ryan John De Lara, CECT Dean.
He added that strong IP frameworks could empower faculty and students by protecting their contributions, foster trust in partnerships with government and industry, and enable commercialization pathways that generate revenue while advancing community resilience.
“By embedding IP literacy and patent strategies into its operations, WUP strengthens its credibility, aligns with international quality assurance standards, and secures its role as a national leader in values-driven, sustainable innovation,” Dr. De Lara concluded.
Dr. Eduardo Tinao served as the main resource speaker and delivered comprehensive discussions on Intellectual Property, patent systems, and practical approaches to conducting patent searches.
“A clear understanding of intellectual property and patent systems is essential in safeguarding research outputs and sustaining meaningful innovation within academic and research institutions,” he said, emphasizing the importance of IP in academic institutions.
