Wesleyan University-Philippines (WUP) welcomed top executives from Taiwan’s Mirror TV, led by CEO Tsai Tsan Poe, to explore the University’s short-term English and cultural immersion program known as LAKBAY (Language Acquisition and Knowledge Building Through Adventures for the Young).

The delegation included Vice President Lee Min, Manager Huang Tzechuan, Special Assistant Ku Shih-Chi, and Consultant Jackie Wang. Joining them were Mirror TV’s production team — Journalist Hsu Shao Yun and Photographer Yu Jia Wei — who came to film the LAKBAY Program for a feature promoting it in Taiwan and other East Asian countries.

WUP students from Teatrong Laan para sa Obra Ngayon (TELON), Wesleyan Chamber Singers, WUP Dance Troupe, SHARE students (students of hard-of-hearing), and the Executive Male Choir welcomed the guests with folk dances, theatrical performances, and Filipino music.

Mr. Christopher Lu, Philippine-Taiwan Partnership Consultant, said, “It is high time for Taiwan and the Philippines to recognize the closeness and shared values between our peoples. We have much in common, and much to learn from each other.”

WUP President Dr. Irineo “Bong” Alvaro Jr. emphasized the value of regional partnerships, “When we speak of internationalization, we often look to the US or Europe. But sometimes, our best opportunities are right next door. Taiwan is not only our closest neighbor. Taiwan is also a trusted friend.”

The LAKBAY Program offers a unique mix of English language instruction and cultural immersion for Taiwanese learners. It goes beyond traditional classrooms by engaging students in real-life situations—from navigating local markets to participating in community activities and exploring heritage sites.

The program aims to teach English for everyday use, promote appreciation of Filipino culture, provide hands-on opportunities to use English, and build confidence in social and travel situations.

Prof. Rio Anne Dizon, Director of the Office for Internationalization and Linkages, said LAKBAY will continue as part of WUP’s long-term internationalization program, “This is not just a one-time project. LAKBAY will be a bridge between the Philippines and our Asian neighbors.”

With the support of Mirror TV, WUP aims to make LAKBAY a leading program for students from Taiwan and East Asia. This supports the WUP’s vision to be a hub for cultural exchange in Central Luzon.
