Together to Empower: WUP Strengthens Workplace Community Through Series of SeminarsAiming to empower and strengthen the workplace, Wesleyan University-Philippines (WUP) conducted a series of seminars on November 6, 2025, at the Ecumenical Chapel, focusing on drug prevention, bomb threat awareness, and cybercrime protection for university personnel.

The morning session focused on the Drug-Free Workplace Seminar, held in partnership with the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA)–Nueva Ecija.
Dr. Laurence H. De Guzman, Chairman of the No to Drugs Committee of WUP, highlighted the importance of awareness and collective responsibility in combating illegal drugs.

“Ginagawa po natin ang ganitong klaseng activity to raise awareness… para maiwasan natin ang pinagbabawal na gamot, at matulungan natin ang mga kasamahan natin, para matulungan natin sila makaahon kung sakasakali silang maging biktima ng ipinagbabawal na gamot” Dr. De Guzman stated.
Atty. Lyndon John de Leon, University Registrar, also gave an inspirational message emphasizing kindness and community support as vital steps toward addressing addiction.

“The opposite of addiction is simple… if you really, really, really want to cure addiction in this country, let’s start by being kind…Today, we are doing our part in curing drug addiction in the workplace,” he shared.

Glenn Guillermo, Information Officer of PDEA–Central Luzon, served as the resource speaker, discussing the concept of a Drug-Free Workplace, laws related to drug prevention—especially in schools—and methods to protect families from drug abuse.

He also introduced new types of illegal drugs, such as ‘Tuklaw,’ and detailed the five components of a Drug-Free Workplace Program, which included Written Policy, Advocacy and Education, Drug Testing, Treatment and Rehabilitation, and Monitoring and Evaluation.

In the afternoon, the Bomb Threat and Cybercrime Awareness Seminar took place.

Dr. Abraham A. Pascua, CESO III, Director of the Human Resources Development Office, delivered the opening remarks, commending the strong participation of employees.

“Meron pa rin palang himala… sa kauna-unahang pagkakataon, napakaraming dumalo sa ganitong gawain,” he said adding humor to his appreciation of the attendance of the employees.

He then discussed the organizational chart of CMC and its importance.

Later, representatives from the Regional Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Canine Unit (EOD–K9) Nueva Ecija discussed types of explosives, relevant laws, and bomb threat management. They explained what constitutes a bomb threat and highlighted the enforcement of the “Anti-Bomb Joke Law.”

The final session, led by the Anti-Cybercrime Group of the Philippine National Police (PNP)–Nueva Ecija, focused on cybersecurity awareness.

They shared six key tips to protect social media accounts—such as enabling multi-factor authentication and using security software—and discussed Republic Act 10175, or the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012, which penalizes online offenses.

“Kung sila po [EOD–K9] ang naghahandle ng actions sa bomb threat, kami naman po [Anti-Cybercrime Group] ang tumitingin sa nag bomb threat,” a representative explained.

The series of seminars reaffirmed WUP-CMC’s dedication to promoting a safe, informed, and empowered workplace for its employees and academic community.
