With the widespread use of social media and online platforms today, more people are finding themselves vulnerable to cybercrimes and online scams. What was once a tool for connection, learning, and convenience has also become a space where safety and privacy can easily be compromised.
In response to this growing concern, nine Juris Doctor students from the John Wesley School of Law and Governance (JWSLG) of Wesleyan University-Philippines (WUP) organized a community forum titled “Strengthening Public Awareness and Legal Remedies Against Cybercrime and Scams” on November 18, 2025, at Nagano Gymnasium in San Leonardo, Nueva Ecija. The activity formed part of their Clinical Legal Education Program (CLEP) I requirement and was conducted in collaboration with the Local Government Unit (LGU) of San Leonardo.
The forum was designed to help members of the community, particularly secondary students, teachers, senior citizens, and persons with disabilities, understand how cybercrimes happen and what legal steps can be taken against them.
The event featured two resource speakers from the legal profession. Atty. Daniel Kristoffer S. Ocampo of Lex Virtus Law Office, an alumnus of JWSLG, discussed the basic concepts of cybercrime, its elements, available defenses, and the process of filing complaints. He also presented real-life examples that helped participants see how such crimes are committed and what precautions can be taken to avoid becoming victims.
Hon. Judge Ann Eillene Morales-Java, Presiding Judge of the Municipal Trial Court of Jaen, spoke about small claims cases and how these can be used as an effective legal remedy. She encouraged the participants to ask questions and share their thoughts during the discussion, making the session more interactive and engaging.
A total of eighty-two (82) participants attended the forum. The event was lively and well-received, with many participants expressing appreciation for the practical and relevant information they learned.
On behalf of Mayor Nina Pauline N. Joson, Mr. Andrei Joson, the Municipal Administrator, extended the LGU’s gratitude to WUP and the JWSLG for bringing this timely and meaningful initiative to the community.
The program was made possible under the supervision of Atty. Maria Carmela C. Wenceslao-Mendoza, President of the Integrated Bar of the Philippines – Nueva Ecija Chapter and Supervising Lawyer of CLEP I.
